History:

The Green Park Inn was opened in 1882 by the Green family on their extensive acreage then known as "Green Park", and originally included its own United States Post Office (the only Post Office for the Green Park area), a piece of which still remains with the hotel, in their "history room".  Throughout the decades and generations she has hosted such historic and memorable figures as Annie Oakley, J.D. Rockefeller, Eleanor Roosevelt, Calvin Cooledge, and Margaret Mitchell who penned part of "Gone With the Wind" while a guest of the hotel.

Some of the haunted history of the Green Park Inn includes a female spirit haunting the third floor.  Years ago, a woman died on the third floor in Room 318 of the Green Park Inn.  Some say that she was a scorned lover who took her own life.  Her apparition has been reported on the third floor of the Green Park Inn as well as strong feelings of uneasiness.  Some people say her lost love came back for her and that his ghost haunts the third floor hallways as well.  It is an historical fact that a person died in room 226, but there are no records of paranormal activity in that room and rooms 332 and 333 are host to reports of disembodied voices.

The innkeepers at the Green Park Inn even have a ghost register at the front desk so guests can record their own supernatural experiences.

Investigation:

We consider Blowing Rock, NC our second home, so we were very thankful that in April of 2010, we were given the opportunity to investigate the Green Park Inn.  We conducted our investigation with a group from Winston-Salem Paranormal and first started on the 1st floor.  EMF and temperature readings were taken along with an EVP session. Temperature readings were normal, however the EMF readings fluctuated between a 2mg and 3mg. Most normal readings are between .5mg and 1mg, so the EMF was a bit high but nothing to be concerned about..

After the 1st floor investigation was completed, we then journeyed into room 318.  Again, EMF and temperature readings were taken along with another EVP session.  Readings were the same as on the 1st floor. We repeated this process in room 332 & 333 as well, then moved into a hallway on the 3rd floor where reports of the female apparition have been made.  During this time Anne was laying on the floor and felt as if her hair was pulled.  The camera was on Anne during this time, but nothing showed up video.

Unfortunately this was the extent of our paranormal experiences during the investigation.

Evidence:

Anne, Christopher, and Dave did not have any personal experiences to make note about.  Most of the experiences they had were easily debunked.  They also did not get any credible evidence after analyzing the audio, video, and photographs.  The evening was uneventful.

Investigation Notes:

It must be noted at the time of this investigation it was discovered the hotel was in need of some renovations.  The hotel had old, unshielded wiring which could account for some of the high levels of EMF.  The levels aren’t high enough to cause any immediate symptoms of EMF sickness, but if exposed for long periods of time delusions and a general feeling of uneasiness can occur which could be the reason for some of the experiences.  Also, the flooring was in need of repair as well.  There were areas in the hallways that were sinking in or slanting to one side.  The same could be said for the rooms as well.  This can cause a “fun house” effect and disorient some people.

While we didn’t capture any paranormal activity during our investigation, this does not discount the claims of disembodied voices and other activity captured during other investigations.  We will return again one day and hopefully capture something paranormal.

UPDATE:

We were one of the last people to stay in the hotel because after our investigation, the hotel was soon closed, auctioned off, renovated, and has since closed its doors to paranormal investigations.  While we are thankful that the new owners have renovated and restored one of the oldest hotels still operating in NC, and a long standing fixture in Blowing Rock’s history, perhaps one day we will be allowed to return to conduct another investigation.
